Ace Babineaux was born on April 25, 1998 in Paris, France to Edgard Babineaux and Céline De La Fontaine as the first of three children. His identical twin brother, Dominique, was born an hour after he was. He has an older sister named Arabella.
Ace had a normal childhood. He was content, but not exactly happy because he was the odd child in the family (or so his parents used to say)--playing with dolls, often wearing a dress on occasion, and generally preferring books to the company of people. This caused his parents to pay more attention to his brother sister--something he minded a great deal and would later cause him to feel neglected. But his brother and sister always spent time with him, so he didn't allow himself to think poorly of his mother and father. At the age of 8, he was diagnose with anemia
, a condition resulting from a lack of red blood cells or dysfunctional red blood cells in the body, and he has to regularly use various supplements and medications to help treat and on occasion blood transfusions. His brother did not have anemia, which his parents were thankful for.
The sundering of his family came when he was ten years old. His mother, tired of constantly fighting her husband on everything, filed for divorce after eight years of marriage. Ace and his siblings took it pretty hard--Ace especially because he believed it was the result of his "oddness" that drove a wedge between them. On September 25, 2007, two days after his sister's fourteenth birthday, the divorce was finalized and Céline got custody of the the children and moved to America to live with her sister.
Ace was enrolled in a private school on a scholarship in Gotham City, which he was bullied for the way he looked, for how he dressed, and at the age of twelve, he was almost sexually assaulted by a High School freshmen, but was saved a teacher. He didn't tell anybody about any of it for a long time and the only outlet he could find was in writing and drawing and, later, going to Police Stations target practice to shoot (which he wasn't never caught for, somehow). Eventually, his depression (a result of what happened) got so bad that he contemplated suicide and attempted to do so, but was saved by Arabella and after her pleading to tell her what was going and why he would do that, he broke down crying and told all the bad things the kids were doing and saying to him and about almost getting raped. Arabella was justifiably horrified and angry. So angry, she told their mother, despite Ace's pleas not to as he did not want their mother thinking poorly of him or differently. Céline went to the school's principal about her son being bullied, who, though unable to expel them, made sure the bullying didn't go with a consequence, but she couldn't convince Ace to press charges against the High School freshmen who had tried to assault him.
Ace started going to therapy to cope and try to recover from his experience. He made progress, but there were times when he'd go a "few steps back" in his recovery.
One day, a cold day in Autumn during his first year of high school, fifteen at that time, he walked home and found his mother, his aunt, and his siblings dead in a pool of blood in their home. He screamed so loud at what he saw that he caught the attention of a neighbor, who came to investigate and called the police. The case went cold and the killer not found. Ace was put in a foster home.
From that day on, Ace took the name "Ebony Wings" and searched for his family's killer, committing small crimes at night, but fighting against heroes and villains alike, using point blanks to never kill. He would not stop until he found the bastard and when that day came, he was going to put a real
bullet into their skull.
